Why Are the Leaves Falling Off My Rubber Plant?

Rubber Plants (Ficus elastica) are popular houseplants known for their attractive glossy leaves. However, if you notice that the leaves are falling off your Rubber Plant, it can be concerning. Understanding the reasons behind this issue is vital to ensuring your plant remains healthy and robust.
One of the most common causes of leaf drop in Rubber Plants is inconsistent watering. They prefer their soil to be kept slightly moist but not soggy. If you allow the soil to dry out completely, the leaves may drop. Conversely, overwatering can lead to root rot, which also results in leaf loss. Check the soil moisture regularly and aim to water your plant when the top inch of soil feels dry.
Another factor could be light levels. Rubber Plants thrive in bright, indirect light. If they are placed in very low light conditions, they may become stressed and start shedding leaves. Conversely, too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. Ensure your Rubber Plant is in a location where it receives plenty of indirect sunlight, ideally near a window with filtered light.
Temperature stress can also contribute to leaf drop. Rubber Plants prefer temperatures between 60-80°F (15-27°C). Sudden temperature changes or exposure to drafts can cause stress leading to leaf drop. Keep your plant in a stable environment, away from drafts and heaters.
Lastly, check for pests. Spider mites and aphids can weaken your plant, resulting in leaf drop. Examine the undersides of leaves for signs of pests and treat them promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
By addressing these factors—water, light, temperature, and pests—you can help your Rubber Plant regain its health and keep its beautiful leaves intact.
